When should you use a striped windsock?
The colour of a windsock is dependent on its location. The colour or colours should be chosen so the windsock stands out from the background making it a clearly visible indicator of wind direction.
Windsock colours
International Civil Aviation Authority (ICAO) guidelines recommend that where feasible a single colour windsock either orange or white is used. However, in locations where a single colour does not contrast with the background, for example an orange windsock in a dessert. A combination of two colours should be used to give satisfactory visibility. Where a two-colour windsock is required it is recommended to use a combination of orange and white, red and white or black and white alternate stripes. The first and last stripes being the darker colour.
Wind direction indicator
A windsock is a simple and effective tool to determine wind direction and a general indication of wind speed. Sometimes they are used beside roads in windy locations to identify hazardous cross winds.
