This blog post is about the use of windsocks in the oil and gas industry. We already explored other industries such as aviation, refrigeration, water & sewage treatment and chemical storage.
There are two main uses for the windsock in the oil and gas industry: site safety in case of an emergency and aviation, usually for helicopter work.
For site safety the windsock is an invaluable quick reference tool for determining wind direction and estimating wind strength. It can take a considerable time to get accurate meteorological information to an emergency. However, the windsock is an instant guide and can help determine how a critical incident may affect the surrounding areas.
For aviation, especially offshore, the windsock is used at helidecks to help the pilot determine wind direction in what can often be a turbulent environment. Many of these windsocks require illumination so that the windsock can be seen at night or in poor weather. The nature of the environment around oil and gas platforms means special precautions often have to be taken – mainly due to the risk of an explosive atmosphere. For applications in ATEX classified zones 1 and 2 the windsock illumination has to be explosion proof and comply with a range of specific requirements.
