Aviation windsocks
One that most people are aware of is the use of windsocks in aviation. Although windsocks seem like a simple element of the runaway they provide an essential health and safety tool for pilots. A windsock offers a quick visible reference to determine wind direction, an indication of wind speed and to identify potential crosswind hazards during landing. The impact that wind factors have may vary depending on the type of aircraft or helicopter. Experienced windsock watchers will also be able to get some information about the character of the wind. As windsocks are only showing conditions in their immediate area of installation airports usually have more than one. Often at each end of the runway and sometimes at the edge of the airfield.
Windsock for aviation
Windsocks come in several sizes and the size is partly dependent on the location and aviation setting e.g light or commercial airports
- Windsocks from 4ft to 8ft in length are used in light and commercial aviation, helicopter landing pads and industrial site safety. All conform to ICAO Annex 14 Vol II
- Windsocks that are 12ft and 14ft in length are used in commercial aviation such as international airports and may also be used in light commercial aviation. Both sizes conform to ICAO Annex 14 Vol I
