Windsocks are attached to the windsock mast with a swivel system that holds the windsock away from the windsock mast. This allows the windsock to rotate freely around 360 degrees and prevents the windsock getting tangled up and damaged on the mast.
Swivel systems
There are two main swivel systems in popular use throughout the world: the swivel arm and the swivel frame. Windsocks fitted with a mouth ring and harness are used with a swivel arm system. Windsocks that have no hardware except a row of eyelets around the mouth are used with the swivel frame system.
Swivel arm system
A swivel arm system works like this: At the top of the windsock mast is a bearing housing. One end of the swivel arm is attached to the bearing housing. The other end has a ring or similar fitting. The windsock for this system has a ring sewn into the mouth (to keep it open) and a harness of wire. At the end of the harness is fitted a swivel shackle or snap clip – this simply fixes to the end of the swivel arm. This system is used a lot in the UK where the windsock is a simple set-up and requires no illumination.
Swivel frame system
A swivel frame system works like this: At the top of the windsock mast is a bearing housing. The windsock frame consists of two rings, a larger ring and a smaller ring, joined at a distance together to make a conical shape like the large end of a windsock. One end of the frame (the big diameter end) is fixed to the bearing housing. The windsock itself is fitted with a row of eyelets around its mouth. The windsock simply gets pulled over the frame and secured to the large ring with cable ties or sometimes it is laced to the ring with cord. This system is favoured in America but is in use all over the world. A swivel frame system is usually used when the windsock requires to be illuminated.
