Windsocks are used in the aviation, chemical, refrigeration, oil & gas industries. Though a relatively simple visual tool they provide a good indication of wind direction and are a valuable safety aid.

Can windsocks detect wind speed?

Windsock Company, are often asked if windsocks are able to detect actual wind speed. This is very subjective and affected by factors such as: locality; environmental conditions; type of material; mast construction and the connection system; is it a swivel arm or swivel frame. 

Windsock calibration studies

Published studies suggest that the angle of the windsock can give a very rough approximation of the wind speed. For example:

  • When the windsock is parallel to the pole, there is no wind.
  • When the windsock is at a close angle away from the pole it is likely to be a light wind,
  • At a 45-degree angle away from the pole suggests a moderate wind
  • At a 90-degree angle away from the pole is generally felt to be a strong wind.

Windsock Company recommends that windsocks should not be used in isolation to determine wind speed. Though can be used in conjunction with a wind speed measuring tool such as handheld anemometer.  Though, only if your windsock is attached to the mast to provide a good indication of wind speed at the actual location.
