What is the Beaufort Scale?

Windsocks are an wind direction indicator and give an indication of wind speed. However, we are often asked if windsocks are able to detect actual wind speed. Whilst there is discussion about whether windsocks can be calibrated to measure wind speed. This is very subjective to many additional factors such as the locality and environment, the type of mast, the fixings and fittings and whether your windsock has a swivel arm or swivel frame.

Windsock Company recommends that windsocks should not be used on their own to ascertain wind speed and should be used in conjunction with a wind speed measuring tool such as handheld anemometer.  An anemometer is a device used for measuring wind speed, and is also a common weather station instrument for providing accurate wind speed readings. Another useful indicator is the Beaufort Scale.

The Beaufort Scale

The Beaufort Scale is an empirical measure that relates wind speed to observed conditions at sea or on land. It measures in forces from 0-12. With 0 meaning it is calm and the relative wind speed is less than 1 knots/km/h/mph and 12 indicating a hurricane with more than 69 knots, 119 km/h and 74 mph. Here is an extract of the Beaufort Scale table that you can find in our Help & Advice section. Click here to see the entire Beaufort Scale table on our website.
