WINDSOCK SWIVEL SYSTEMS – BASIC MODELS

Throughout the world there are two main windsock swivel systems in use:

a) the swivel arm and b) the swivel frame.

The purpose of the windsock swivel system is to hold the windsock away from its mast (so it does not get snagged or damaged) which allows it to easily inflate and freely rotate around 360o. These are the requirements necessary for the windsock to give an accurate visual reading of wind direction.


WINDSOCK SWIVEL ARM

A windsock swivel arm system comprises a bearing housing with an arm attached to it. The arm extends out and at its end is an eye or ring provided for the attachment of a swivel shackle or snap clip that is supplied and fitted to the end of the windsock harness.

For this type of swivel system you need to purchase a windsock that is fitted with a harness. The harness is an integral part of the windsock and is at one end attached to the windsock mouth ring and at the other terminates with a swivel shackle or snap clip which in turn attaches to the swivel arm.

This system is favoured throughout the UK but is also used in other parts of the world. Its simplicity is ideal if the windsock mast does not have illumination for the windsock. Generally less expensive than a windsock swivel frame the same basic model of swivel arm will fit a variety of windsocks. WINDSOCK SWIVEL FRAME

A windsock swivel frame usually comprises a bearing housing with the framework to support the windsock attached to it. The frame consists of a large ring joined to a smaller ring with a distance between them of typically a quarter of the windsock length.

An alternative to a full windsock frame is a single ring system that holds only the mouth of the windsock open. Consisting of one ring only attached to the swivel head this is a cost effective way to get your windsock flying.

For this type of swivel system you need to purchase a windsock that is fitted with a single band of eyelets. The mouth of the windsock (the large end) pulls over the frame (which holds part of the length of the windsock open) and is secured from falling off with either cable ties or lacing cord.

This system is favoured in America but is also in regular use throughout the world. Where the windsock is required to be illuminated then a swivel frame system is used. Generally more expensive than a swivel arm system, a frame will generally only fit the size of windsock that it designed for. However, if you only have need to use one size of windsock then there is a potential saving in the cost of replacements since windsocks for this system are not fitted with a harness. Swivel Arm – Internal Fit

  • For use with windsocks that are fitted with a harness
  • Swivel head designed to only fit inside a standard tube size of 54mm inside diameter
  • This arm system is designed to fit our standard 60mm outside diameter aluminium windsock mast system but can be used for any system where the internal fit accurately matches this unit.
  • Suitable only for use onshore with normal, inland, weather conditions.
  • Suitable for windsocks with a mouth diameter of up to 24 inch (61cm) diameter.
